Unit 6.2A Assignment

On the class wiki site, post your favorite new Web 2.0 tool that has not been covered in detail in this class that you have discovered in this course or elsewhere. List the URL, what the tool is, and why you find it useful using the wiki template page. No duplication allowed-each page must be an original new tool. This can be done after reviewing the Unit 9 material, which covers more Web 2.0 resources.

Description of Site:

Describe in detail what the site does, what service(s) it provides, and how it does so. In addition, cover the following items in your description in narrative form.

Socrative is a website based assessment tool that is available for use on any device. Signing up for Socrative is free for both students and teachers. The website operates with very few adds which are found at the very bottom of the home page. Socrative allows teachers to log into their account to quickly create or find classroom-based assessments. These assessments can be open ended, true/false, multiple choice, and reflective questions. When creating assessments for a specific class, teachers have the option of sharing their assessment with a colleague, the general public or keeping it private.

While there is only a free account option, there are two different account types—teacher account or student account. The teacher account charts the results of student responses to the quiz for the teacher in real time. The teacher can view the assessments results by students or by question. Teacher’s can also hide student names when charting the result to share with the class. Additionally, the teacher can enable students to give feedback to other student responses through the assessment tool.

As for its use in the classroom, the multiple choice and true/false assessment tools could be used in classes across all grade levels. However, the more reflective and open-ended assessments would better serve secondary classes.

  • Is it a free site or does it have both free and paid features or just a trial version?
  • Does it have ads?
  • Does it allow sharing of content and collaboration? if so, how?
  • Does it have a specific section for teachers and students?
  • Is it appropriate for use in schools?
  • Is it appropriate for use by students? If so, what grade levels would it be appropriate for, in your estimation

Educational Uses of Site

In a secondary classroom, this website could be used at the end of lesson for students to reflect back on their learning and help the teacher understand how confident the students are in the new material. It could also be used to create a modified Socratic seminar. The teacher could pose open-ended questions for the students to collaborate on through the assessment tool. Across all grade levels, the rocket review tool could be used as fun and competitive way for students to review their concepts at the end of a unit. The teacher could use data collected through the website using informal assessments to group the students into study groups to play the rocket review.

Review of Site

This website does a great job at making assessments easy for the teacher. Not only is it simple to navigate and create assessments, it also charts the results in real time for the teacher and class to review. The option to make results anonymous gives the students a comfortable place to collaborate, while still allowing the teacher to manage student accountability on their own device through student account names. This free assessment tool exceeds all expectations.
